Snackies

August 28th, 2010

:Hong Kong Street Food:

Hong Kong is well-known for the diverse and delicious cuisine off and on the streets. Here are some of my personal favorites.

Shiu mai -a well-known dim sum treat. Around $1.2 a bowl of 12.

The ones you get on the street are usually made with fish meat unlike the pork meat shiu mais you get at dimsum. The fish meat ones are usually accompanied by soya sauce and hot sauce. They even sell microwave ones in 7/11.

Hong Kong style egg waffles, my personal favorite. $1.2 per bag.

It’s a very ancient street snack that’s been passed on in the Hong Kong culture. I guess it just never lost its popularity =]. They’re sold everywhere on the streets, there are some famous ones such as the one right across of Time Square, which are very crispy but not very sweet. So, depending on your own taste, you may find different stores better.

Hong Kong style calamari – deep fried octopus legs, pepper and salt. $2 a bag.

I’m just going to go ahead and say they’re delicious artery cloggers.

Shopping Mong Kok

August 26th, 2010

:Mong Kok : Hong Kong:

Women’s street is a long outdoor market selling almost anything, fake and cheap of course.  LV wallets, handbags, tees, stuff toys, true religion jeans, anything you can think of, you can get here.

One downfall of course is that it’s always packed by thousands of people. And since it’s outdoor, during the summer it’s not unusual to have to shop in the unbearable humidity and heat, or even at times, the pouring rain.

Street food is everywhere. They’re delicious. There are the traditional shiu mai (basically the same thing you get at dim sum), sausages, fish balls, and much more.

Another main attraction of Mong Kok is the sneaker street. The whole street is full of Nike, Puma, Adidas, and local stores that sell the latest shoe models from mainly US and Japan.
